    Benefits of frozen semen
At Show Dogs On Ice, we know from personal experience how vital a key dog can be to a breeding program.
Unfortunately, we never know when disease, injury or even unexpected loss will end the natural breeding life of
our dogs.  The most effective means of ensuring future availability of your key dog for breeding is to utilize frozen
semen.  By freezing semen you guarantee yourself continued access to their unique genetic contribution and you
have the opportunity to make semen available to others should demand for them arise in the future.

    Our Services
Show Dogs On Ice offers full service semen evaluation, semen freezing and on-site frozen semen storage.  We use
top of the line equipment, including a Spermacue photometer to provide rapid and highly accurate sperm counts, a
Zeiss phase contrast microscope to aid in sperm motility and morphology evaluation, and a specially constructed
walk in cool room for semen processing.

Semen collection for freezing can be done by appointment or we can keep your dog at our boarding facility for an
extended period to allow us to collect and freeze their semen over multiple days.

    Our process
Our semen freezing process utilizes Minitube's CaniPRO two step culture medium which has been specifically
formulated to provide high post-thaw relative motility.  Our use of 0.5mL straws enables us to permanently
identify all frozen semen we process and allows for a simple thaw procedure that can be easily followed by any
veterinarian performing an insemination using your dog's semen.

    When to freeze
We can attempt to freeze semen on dogs of virtually any age.  However the best results will be obtained when
collecting semen from a dog in their prime breeding years, which are generally considered to be between 1 and 6
years of age.  Our recommendation is that you have semen frozen as early as possible to ensure the highest
quality and to maximize the number of breeding units obtained from each collection.

    AKC requirements
AKC requires that each dog whose semen is frozen be permanently identified by either microchip or tattoo and
that they have a DNA profile on file with AKC.  If needed, we can assist you in meeting these requirements by
implanting a microchip and/or collecting a DNA sample to submit along with the necessary paperwork registering
your dog's frozen semen with AKC.
